Paris Brunner could be suspended after a controversial celebration in AS Monaco’s 1-1 draw at Strasbourg on Saturday.

He celebrated in front of the end housing Ultras Boys 90, the main supporters’ group, after equalising. He first cupped a hand behind his ear, then drew his hand across his throat, prompting loud whistles and shock in the stadium.

The National Ethics Council has referred the incident to the Ligue de Football Professionnel’s disciplinary commission. “We do not need a complaint, a referee’s report or a delegate’s report to take up a case,” said CNE president Frédéric Thiriez. He told L’Équipe.

“It seems, a priori, that the gesture could constitute a breach of the principle of exemplary conduct set out in the ethics charter.” Under the regulations, the 20-year-old could be banned for between one and four matches, depending on whether it is deemed excessive or inappropriate, or intimidating or threatening.

In 2014, Edinson Cavani received a one-match suspension in a similar case after miming a rifle shot towards the crowd when scoring against Lens. That gesture was judged excessive and inappropriate, without aggression or intimidation.
