Kaizer Chiefs' recent positive momentum faces a potential test from the current international break, according to former star Patrick Mayo. The club had built a three-match winning streak and was riding a nine-game unbeaten run in competitive fixtures before the pause in domestic football.

With only one player, Flavio da Silva, called up for national duty, the concern is not about player fatigue but about the disruption to the team's rhythm. Mayo acknowledges that while the break poses a challenge, the solution is for the team to stay active through friendly matches.

"Yes, obviously, they will be affected because playing friendlies is not like playing official games. They are not the same, especially in terms of intensity," Mayo stated. "But friendlies help to a certain extent to help the players from being rusty. So, for now, they should just keep on playing friendlies."

Mayo also highlighted the importance of maintaining form ahead of the longer AFCON break later in the season. "There is also the AFCON break, and it is also very important to go [into the hiatus] on a high because that break is going to be too much as it is from December to January. They should end this year on a high note."

Despite the interruption, Mayo believes the Glamour Boys are genuine contenders for the Betway Premiership title, a trophy they haven't won since 2015. He points to the perceived vulnerability of traditional powerhouses as a key reason for his optimism.

"Yes, Chiefs have good PSL title chances because Sundowns have not been dominating this season. They won’t be dominating, everybody can see that," he added. "They [Sundowns] are under pressure; they have already played more league games than other teams this season, but they don’t have that healthy lead."
