Paul Wanner has chosen to represent Austria at senior level, ending his deliberation with Germany ahead of this summer’s World Cup in North America.

“This decision was probably the hardest of my career. Because through my parents, my upbringing and the stages of my career, I truly have two hearts in my chest,” he told Sky.

Talk of a switch had persisted and he even rejected a call-up from Julian Nagelsmann in November 2024.

Born in Austria and raised in Germany, he came through Bayern Munich’s academy, becoming the club’s youngest Bundesliga debutant in January 2022.

After productive loans with SV Elversberg and Heidenheim, Bayern sold him to PSV Eindhoven last summer for a reported €15 million.

He has impressed in the Netherlands and established himself as a regular under Peter Bosz. With Ralf Rangnick having led Austria to their first World Cup since 1998, he has a chance to be selected.

“The FIFA World Cup is a dream for every player. But like any other player, I have to earn a nomination.”

“I’m especially grateful to Antonio Di Salvo, Julian Nagelsmann, and the entire German Football Association: all the conversations were fair and on an equal footing, without any pressure,” said Wanner. “There were never any guarantees involved.”
