Pauline Sierra, 22, is balancing professional football and academia, having signed a two-year deal with ASSE this summer and starting the new term at the University of Lyon this week.

According to Le Progres, the defender was developed at OL Lyonnes before spells at Dijon and Toulouse, all while continuing her studies alongside her career.

As the new academic year begins, she is taking part in ASSE’s first away trip of the season on Saturday and is eager to play.

She left Toulouse with a master’s in molecular and cellular biology, graduating with highest honours and as the top student in her year.

She had hoped to continue with a thesis exploring links between genetics and human disease, notably cancer, but that plan is on hold for now. After her playing years, she could see herself working as a researcher.
