Paulo Angioni, Fluminense director of football, dies aged 80 | OneFootball

Paulo Angioni, Fluminense’s director of football and a football executive across four decades, has died aged 80. He had been receiving treatment for pancreatic cancer since early September.

The club said in a statement that he died in the early hours in Rio de Janeiro and hailed a pioneering career. It noted this fourth spell from 2018, crediting him with helping deliver the Libertadores and the Recopa, plus the Taça Rio 2020, Taça Guanabara in 2022, 2023 and 2026, and the 2022 and 2023 Campeonato Carioca.

Angioni began in the early 1980s, leaving Municipal, in Tijuca, for Vasco, where he stayed 14 years. He later worked at Flamengo, Palmeiras, Corinthians, Bahia, Olaria and Fluminense. He also served the CBF and was Brazil’s team supervisor in 1989 and 1990.

His bond with Fluminense was close, first joining in 2000 and returning several times before resuming the executive role from 2018. Among many honours, Fluminense’s maiden 2023 Libertadores stands out as a career landmark.

Trained in psychology and sports administration, he was an early advocate of mental health support in football, helping introduce psychologists at Vasco in 1989. As pressures on players grew, he later argued clubs should also employ psychiatrists. Working with players consistently underpinned his motivation.
