OL head coach Paulo Fonseca says Malick Fofana is fully focused on Wednesday’s Champions League play-off second leg against Fenerbahçe at 21:00, and that the club want to keep the 21-year-old despite Roma’s interest.
According to L'Équipe, his agents, Roc Nation, reached an agreement with Roma last week and have widely circulated that news. OL still need at least one major sale before the window closes, so Fofana could be allowed to leave if a bid of around €40m arrives, a price the Italians are not inclined to pay.
Speaking on Tuesday, Fonseca said he senses Fofana is highly motivated both for the match and to continue at OL. He added the club are not especially concerned about his sale, that they could sell now because offers exist, but that the situation is being handled carefully and his quality is recognised.
Fonseca also cautioned would-be buyers that they would have to pay very well for Fofana given his qualities. For now the club are turning down approaches because they believe in him and consider his value to be very high.
The situation is expected to move later in the week. The result on Wednesday night should influence how the Fofana case, and those of Pavel Sulc and Ruben Kluivert, develop.
