FC Barcelona and Newcastle United shared the spoils as their clash ended in a draw. Despite the support of St James’ Park behind them, the home side was unable to beat La Blaugrana, and Hansi Flick’s side will likely view this result favourably.
The match ended 1–1, and it took a late penalty from Lamine Yamal to ensure that Barça take this game back to the Spotify Camp Nou without any disadvantage. However, it was hardly a vintage performance from the team.
Here are the player ratings for Flick’s side.
Starting XI:
Joan Garcia: 7.5/10
Made some crucial saves and kept Barça in the game for as long as possible. However, he should have done better for the goal the team conceded.
Ronald Araujo: 5.5/10
Ineffective for much of the game going forward, and sluggish on the ball as well. His inability to get back into position in time also ended up costing the team, with Newcastle United having a man free to score.
Pau Cubarsi: 7.0/10
A valiant performance from the youngster, who even made a crucial block that might well have prevented a goal. A solid display from the young Spaniard.
Gerard Martin: 7.0/10
A decent performance alongside Cubarsi, but he was rarely tested. He did well with his passing, but there was little else where he was pushed to the limit. However, he made a few important interventions.
Joao Cancelo: 6.5/10
Tried some fancy passes, and a few of them allowed the team to progress well. However, he should have done more when he got into space.
Marc Bernal: 6.5/10
A decent game in midfield, but he struggled at times when Newcastle United pressed. However, he did well in his duels but ultimately had to come off due to some kind of discomfort.
Pedri: 7.5/10
Sharp in midfield and perhaps the only Barcelona player who had an answer to Newcastle United’s physicality in this game. However, he was not allowed to complete the match, with Hansi Flick being a bit cautious with his star midfielder.
Lamine Yamal: 7.0/10
A quiet game by his standards, but he did well to manoeuvre his way out of trouble and play some promising passes. He ended up scoring the penalty that Barcelona won near the end of the game.
Fermin Lopez: 5.5/10
Hardly had an impact all game and was essentially nonexistent in midfield. He barely won his duels and often ended up losing possession as well.
Raphinha: 6.0/10
Showed good intensity at times and should have had an assist for the pass he provided to Robert Lewandowski. A decent performance.
Robert Lewandowski: 5.0/10
Barely involved in the game, his pressing was lacklustre, and he missed a very clear opportunity as well. A forgettable performance by the Polish striker.
Substitutes:
Dani Olmo: 6.5/10
Not especially effective overall, but he ended up winning a crucial penalty for Barça.
Marcus Rashford: 6.0/10
Added some energy on the left wing and brought some much-needed directness.
Marc Casado: 6.0/10
Replaced Marc Bernal after he went down injured.
Xavi Espart: N/A
Not enough time or influence on the game to warrant a rating.
Ferran Torres: N/A
Not enough time or influence on the game to warrant a rating.
