Earlier this week David Ornstein again reported on Sky Sports News that there was a strong chance that this season could be Pep Guardiola’s final season as the manager of Manchester City. Now, to counter that report, two new reports have emerged stating that Guardiola could stay at City past this summer. The City manager is contracted until the end of the 2026/27 season. Watching Guardiola in action and listening to him speak, there is nothing to suggest that the end is near for Guardiola at City. If anything, he seems fired up by the task at hand at the Etihad.
First of all, Rob Dawson has reported for ESPN that the rumours of Pep Guardiola leaving City at the end of this season has come from chatter between rival executives, players and agents. Furthermore, Dawson reports that sources at Manchester City are unsure when Pep Guardiola will call time on his spell as City manager. Dawson adds that sources close to SEG, the agency that works with Pep Guardiola’s representatives, report that any information on Pep Guardiola’s future is heavily protected.
Mark Douglas and Pete Hall have reported for iNews that Pep Guardiola hasn’t made a decision on when he will leave his post as Manchester City manager. It is included in the iNews reports that the opportunity to speak on world issues with the spotlight that comes with being City manager could persuade Guardiola to see out the remainder of his contract. Furthermore, the iNews report adds that Guardiola could also be eager to stay on as City manager to see out the rebuild of his team.

Watching Pep Guardiola on the sideline, or listening to him speak recently, there is nothing to suggest that he is coming to the end of his time as Manchester City manager. If anything, Guardiola’s actions and words suggest the opposite. Pep Guardiola seems fired up of late, whether that is pointing out the issues City have faced with VAR recently, political issues, or any matters involving his team. Also, the challenge of leading Manchester City back to the top of the Premier League seems to be driving Pep Guardiola.
I can understand Manchester City’s rivals wanting to see the back of Pep Guardiola. He remains the best manager in football, and he has also dominated English football in an unprecedented manner during his time at the Etihad. But looking right now, Guardiola seems determined to take this new-look City side on another journey.
Lastly, Pep Guardiola was asked yesterday if he could leave Manchester City at the end of this season. His answer looked to have revealed his intentions. When asked about his future, and if he could leave City at the end of this season, Guardiola emphatically stated: “No, because I have one more year contract. (So you’ll stay until end of 2026/27?) The question on that was one month or two months ago, you were not here, and I’ll tell you again: It’s the same answer that I answered two months ago [I’m staying]…“
