Ligue 1 McDonald’s, Round 25, 07/03/2026

After being dumped out of the Coupe de France by Toulouse FC on penalties during the week, Olympique de Marseille would take their chance to seek immediate revenge with a 1-0 win courtesy of Mason Greenwood

The Match

Despite controlling 62% possession in the first half, Marseille struggled to create a bounty of clear-cut chances in a fairly tepid occasion. Mason Greenwood threatened in the 16th minute when Igor Paixão played the ball wide from a free kick. The two would combine minutes later to greater effect.

Paixão again played the creator as he drove down the left wing and attacked the box. He looked for the cut-back, finding Greenwood’s late run into a pocket of space. The winger finished the move to become Ligue 1’s outstanding top scorer with 15 goals.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang would come close to doubling the lead when Cristian Cásseres Jr. blindly passed to the striker. However, Aubameyang dragged his shot wide. Toulouse offered little going forward until a late spell of pressure inspired by Warren Kamanzi. The wing-back provided Aron Dønnum with a great chance to level the scores late in the half, but the winger could only gift his shot to the heavens.

Toulouse kept their momentum going in the second half. Yann Gboho hit the crossbar in the 54th minute following a cutback from Dønnum. It was a chance that you’d expect the Toulouse top scorer to net comfortably, and it was made worse that he took the chance almost off the boot of Kamanzi.

Bad tempers had been building throughout the match and spilled over midway through the second half, when Dønnum clashed with Greenwood following the Englishman’s decision to do a little showboating pirouette. Both would see a yellow card for their involvement in the fracas.

Greenwood would continue to play the pantomime villain to the home crowd when his number came up on the sidelines. He dutifully ignored it until the referee warned him about time-wasting, to which he then slowly trudged off the pitch. A surprising decision, and perhaps one Habib Beye wouldn’t have made if not for the earlier yellow.

Paixão had the chance to make the scoreline more flattering at the death, but skied his 1v1 effort. It wouldn’t matter in the end. Les Phocéens had been far from convincing, but they had done just enough to keep their heads above water and claim a valuable three points. Three points which would put them provisionally into third, with Olympique Lyonnais still to play on Sunday evening.

Marseille Player Ratings

Gerónimo Rulli, 6

Facundo Medina, 6

Leonardo Balerdi, 6

A better performance from a player who has come under a lot of criticism in recent weeks. There was a moment that verged on catastrophe in the first half, but he responded well and earned a well-fought clean sheet.

Benjamin Pavard, 6

Timothy Weah, 6

Geoffrey Kondogbia, 7

Pierre-Emile Højbjerg, 6

Quinten Timber, 5

Igor Paixão, 6

Dangerous in the first half, but like the rest of his team, faded in the second. He really should have netted at the very end of the match, as his embarrassed reaction told.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, 5

Mason Greenwood, 7

The most dangerous-looking player in the first half. He looked like one of the few players who could threaten the Toulouse defence. He faded in the second half and likely was taken off because Habib Beye was concerned that he was at risk of picking up a second. He certainly tested his luck as he delayed his substitution, pretending not to notice that the 4th official had lifted his number.
