Plymouth Argyle have endured a difficult start to life back in League One under Tom Cleverley.

The Pilgrims suffered relegation from the Championship last season, and were aiming to fight for promotion back to the second tier this campaign.

It was hoped that the appointment of Cleverley in the summer would help keep the team competitive after the disappointing departure of Miron Muslic, but results have been hard to come by under the former Watford manager.

Perhaps the January transfer window could offer some respite to the Devon outfit, as it will afford the club the opportunity to make changes to and improve the first team squad.

It could also be an opportunity to offload players and loan out young stars that need regular game time away from the first team squad.

Plymouth urged to loan Tegan Finn in January

When asked if there is one player in Cleverley’s squad who could be sold or loaned in January, FLW’s Plymouth fan pundit Luke Hodge named youngster Tegan Finn.

He believes the 17-year-old is in need of regular minutes to aid his development, and that he hopes the club learns from their mistakes in handling Freddie Issaka and Caleb Roberts from the recent past.

“Well one player I hope that gets loaned out, because I think he has a fantastic future, however at his age now he needs to play minutes and not sporadically at Argyle, is Tegan Finn,” Hodge told Football League World.

“I think he needs to go away to get some minutes under his belt, play regularly, give him three months of men’s football and then reassess him when he comes back at the end of the season.

“But that kid’s got a bright future, and I just don’t think playing 20 minutes, half an hour here and there is doing him any good whatsoever.

“I think that’s been proved with both Freddie Isaaka and Caleb Roberts in the last couple of years.

“And I really hope Argyle don’t make the same mistake with Tegan.

“He either needs to play more regularly for Argyle, which I think he’s quite capable of doing, or if not get him out on loan.

“Get him playing men’s football, get him learning the dark arts, get him kicked around a little bit and just develop like he should be at this age.”

Plymouth are currently bottom of the League One table, having earned just 13 points from a total of 15 games played.

This has put Cleverley under intense pressure to get results, with the club at risk of suffering back-to-back relegations unless their form improves.

Finn has played a minor role in Plymouth’s season so far, with the midfielder featuring eight times so far, with six of those appearances coming as a substitute.

Next up for the Pilgrims in the league is a trip to face Port Vale on 22 November in a 12.30pm kick-off.

Tegan Finn is in a good spot at Plymouth

Finn is getting regular minutes at the age of just 17, so there is an argument to be made that he is fine where he is for the time being.

The midfielder has so much time on his hands at the moment to develop his game at senior level that spending the full season at Home Park shouldn’t be too detrimental, even if he doesn’t become a regular starter.

But given Plymouth’s form, there is a chance that his role in the side improves between now and January.
