Portuguesa said in a statement that it had identified the individuals responsible for racist abuse directed at Corinthians goalkeeper Hugo Souza. The club announced on Tuesday afternoon that the fans had been expelled from its membership scheme.

Hugo saved a penalty in normal time, then denied two more in the shootout, sealing Corinthians’ place in the Paulistão semi-finals.

The abuse occurred after the match on Sunday 22 at Estádio do Canindé, in the Campeonato Paulista quarter-finals.

The club reiterated that such acts do not reflect its or its supporters’ values and said discriminatory behaviour will not be tolerated.

The identities of those involved are to be forwarded to the relevant authorities.
