FC Augsburg’s surprising dream start to the new Bundesliga season is apparently catching the attention of FC Bayern as well. With two wins and one draw in their first three league games, the Fuggerstadt team sits in third place in the Bundesliga. This even prompted Uli Hoeneß to personally pick up the phone.

As FCA coach Manuel Baum revealed to Sky ahead of the home game against Bayer Leverkusen, he received a call from Bayern’s honorary president. Host Michael Leopold asked the 47-year-old about a “call from Tegernsee”—an unmistakable reference to Hoeneß, who lives there.

Baum initially reacted with surprise and didn’t want to reveal any details of the conversation. “Wherever you get your information from, it’s really amazing. Still, please forgive me for not discussing the content,” explained the Augsburg coach.

When Leopold then pressed him on whether Hoeneß had at least expressed his appreciation for Baum’s work so far, Baum was finally coaxed into saying: “Yes, you could put it that way.”

Exactly what Hoeneß told his fellow Bundesliga coach remains unclear. One thing is certain, however: FC Augsburg’s progress has not gone unnoticed by the longtime Bayern executive.

The Fuggerstadt team has earned seven points from its first three league games, marking a very strong start to the season. The team also held its own in the DFB Cup, defeating Energie Cottbus in the first round.

It’s not just the points tally that’s noteworthy. Apparently, the way Augsburg is currently playing soccer is also earning recognition.

This isn’t limited to Hoeneß. National team coach Jürgen Klopp has also given Baum positive feedback.

“I’ve also spoken with Kloppo about players, and he’s given us good feedback on how we’re playing—as have many others,” Baum revealed. For the FCA coach, this recognition from prominent figures is a testament to the development of the entire club. “I think what’s happened here is a huge compliment to the entire club.”

The fact that Hoeneß personally picked up the phone, however, shows the impression Augsburg has made with its performances so far. The 74-year-old continues to closely follow developments in the Bundesliga and, as is his tradition, doesn’t hold back when sharing his opinion.
