Pre-Season Preview: Leeds United vs RB Leipzig | OneFootball

A first ever meeting with RB Leipzig awaits Leeds United on Saturday afternoon, who welcome the German side to Elland Road in a pre-season friendly.

The encounter in West Yorkshire will take on a slightly different look to a usual match, instead played over 120 minutes and consisting of two hour-long halves.

Daniel Farke’s side have enjoyed a productive summer to date, facing Wrexham, Sunderland and Liverpool in a tournament in the US which saw the Whites finish as winners!

Last time out, it was a scintillating second half as United completed a fine turn around against the Reds. Two goals down at the break, American international Brenden Aaronson pulled one back with a close-range finish before Dominic Calvert-Lewin showed his killer instinct to restore parity.

Within moments, midfielder Sean Longstaff completed the turnaround through a low finish with Calvert-Lewin then grabbing his second of the evening with an emphatic header.

RasenBallsport Leipzig e.V, to give Saturday’s visitors their full title, finished in third place in last season’s Bundesliga standings, qualifying directly for the UEFA Champions League.

It has been a meteoric rise for the team since their founding in 2009, finishing second in their maiden top-flight campaign of 2016/17 and qualifying for continental football in all bar one season since then.

While yet to meet the Saxony outfit, the Whites have faced opposition from the city before, progressing over two legs against SC Leipzig in the 1965/66 edition of the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup.

In then-East Germany, goals from Peter Lorimer and Billy Bremner secured a 2-1 victory before a stalemate in West Yorkshire saw Don Revie’s side progress to the Third Round. Leeds reached the final four of the competition that campaign, lifting the trophy two years later.

The encounter may give supporters a chance to see some new faces in action at Elland Road for the very first time as Leeds players! The club kicked off their summer business with the exciting arrival of Wales international Harry Wilson, signing from Fulham after enjoying a campaign with Fulham which saw him collect their Player of the Season award!

Then, towering defender Tarik Muharemović made the move from Serie A side Sassuolo, before a club record deal struck with Manchester City brought England international goalkeeper James Trafford over the Pennines.

Throughout matchday, supporters will be able to take part in various Red Bull themed events. Stadium redevelopment updates:

Due to ongoing redevelopment works, the Main West Stand Gate is closed and there is no through access. Please allow extra time to navigate Elland Road and surrounding areas whilst works are continuing.

Our new North Stand Ticket Office will be open for the game. It is located at the bottom of Lowfields Road across from the Fan Zone. The Ticket Office will be open from 9am until 2.30pm.

Discussing the preparations for next campaign so far, Aaronson said: “It is crazy to say that we are only halfway through pre-season! We are looking forward to these next three games to get some more minutes under our legs and then get us ready for the new season.

“It has been a good summer where I got to work on a lot of things. I got to get better. That is my goal to transfer what I have been doing this pre-season so far and then, yeah, bring it into the year.”
