Preston North End have sacked manager Paul Heckingbottom after six defeats in their opening seven Championship matches. He is the first managerial casualty in the second tier this term.

The club said in a statement that, despite significant investment in the squad, results during 2026 and at the start of this campaign were not acceptable, and they thanked him for his professionalism and work ethic.

Preston lost 1-0 at home to newly promoted Lincoln City on Saturday, leaving them on three points, earned via a 2-1 win over Blackburn Rovers the previous weekend.

Heckingbottom, 49, was appointed in August 2024 and oversaw a 14th-place finish last season, having ended the prior campaign one point above the relegation zone.

As a consequence, assistant Stuart McCall has also departed. Jason Euell will take interim charge while the club looks to appoint a new manager as soon as possible.

Saints' first Championship meeting with the Lancashire side is scheduled for Saturday, November 7.
