Brazil’s enduring 1987 championship dispute has taken another turn, as the Prosecutor-General’s Office sent a favourable opinion to the Supreme Federal Court in Flamengo’s case seeking joint recognition with Sport. According to Coluna Do Fla, the filing supports the club’s bid to share the Campeonato Brasileiro title.
In 2011 the CBF recognised both clubs as champions, but in 2017 Sport prevailed at the Supreme Federal Court to be the sole official winner. Prosecutor-general Paulo Gonet considers Flamengo’s arguments valid, saying the nullification of CBF Resolution 02/2011 should be set aside, that Sport’s recognition remains within the final ruling, and that shared titling is not prohibited.
While in Recife for the pre-premiere of the film “Zico, o Samurai de Quintino”, Zico was asked by local influencers about 1987. The former No 10 replied that Sport had not faced Brazil’s leading sides in that competition and argued Flamengo are the rightful champions unless that test was met.
Back in 1987 the CBF said it lacked funds to stage the Brasileiro, so the Clube dos 13 organised the 16-team Copa União with major sponsors and strong attendances. The CBF later ran its own league without those 16 clubs, calling it the Yellow Module, and rebranded the Copa União as the Green Module, then ordered a play-off between the two champions.
Flamengo and Internacional refused to take part, so Sport and Guarani were awarded walkovers and contested the final, which Sport won. In the Copa União decider Flamengo beat Internacional 1-0, Bebeto scoring.
