Queens Park Rangers 0-2 Sheffield United: Blades Comfortably Pass QPR Test

Sheffield United breezed past the challenge of Queens Park Rangers with a 2-0 victory in West London on Saturday afternoon.

The Blades bossed the first half and they were rewarded for their efforts when Tahith Chong’s cross found its way to Callum O’Hare at the back post who steered it goal wards and despite a QPR man on the line, it rolled beyond the line. United’s tails were up and there was simply no stopping them or the sensational strike from Tyrese Campbell who unleashed a venomous swerving left-footed shot which curved away from the QPR goalkeeper and into the far corner.

First Half

United began on the front foot and were rewarded for their early intent inside 13 minutes. A sharp move down the right saw Sydie Peck and Tahith Chong combine cleverly to stretch the defence. The resulting delivery found Callum O’Hare arriving at the far post, and the midfielder showed composure to squeeze his close-range effort home and give the Blades a deserved lead.

The visitors continued to press with purpose and nearly doubled their advantage ten minutes later. O’Hare was again at the heart of the move, collecting Ki-Jana Hoever’s low cross and teeing up Tyrese Campbell, but the striker’s placed effort drifted just wide of the post.

At the other end, the R’s responded with a brief spell of pressure. Jimmy Dunne’s side threatened twice in quick succession, but Tanganga was perfectly positioned to head clear Morgan’s looping effort before Varane fired over from distance moments later.

United’s second goal arrived on 33 minutes and was a moment of real quality. Peck, influential throughout the first half, slipped a neat pass into Campbell, who took aim from outside the box and lashed a superb strike beyond the goalkeeper to double the advantage.

The hosts emerged for the second half with renewed energy following a couple of changes at the interval and began to apply pressure. Hoever was forced into a timely clearance behind for a corner as United weathered the early push. Chris Wilder responded with a double change of his own, introducing Gustavo Hamer and Andre Brooks in place of Campbell and Chong to inject fresh legs into the contest.

United looked to seal the points on the counter and carved out a promising opportunity, only for Brooks to fire over from a dangerous position. That miss briefly kept the home side interested, and the Blades survived two scares in quick succession. First, Smyth beat Adam Davies to a long ball but failed to convert, and from the resulting corner Kone saw his header ruled out for offside, with Smyth adjudged to have obstructed the United stopper.

As the clock ticked in United’s favour, the Blades continued to threaten on the break. Peck nearly added a third goal to cap an impressive personal performance, but his effort was well saved by Walsh as United sought to put the icing on the cake.
