Quique Sánchez Flores has suffered a major setback at Deportivo Alavés, as TAS has reactivated Facundo Garcés’s suspension, ruling him out from this week and for the rest of the season.
The club said in a statement that the defender is banned from official matches for 12 months, with time already served between 25 September 2025 and 26 January 2026 counted, and the suspension takes effect on 5 March 2026. It added that Garcés may continue training with the squad during this period.
FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee announced in September that seven players, including Garcés, were suspended for one year over document falsification linked to 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers. Malaysia’s FA was also fined 350,000 Swiss francs.
Alavés appealed, and after 128 days Garcés returned when TAS granted a provisional stay of the ban. The tribunal has now issued its ruling earlier than expected and reactivated the sanction, leaving eight months to serve from this week.
He will miss Sunday’s trip to Mestalla, the first of many matches he will sit out. Sánchez Flores must reshape his back line without Garcés and Víctor Parada, who is suspended after a red card at the Ciutat de Valencia.
