According to Globo.com, Santos' move for Marco Di Cesare has stalled after Racing demanded 80% of the R$31 million fee be paid up front. The 24-year-old centre-back wants the switch, but the terms have complicated talks.

That would require an immediate R$24.8 million outlay, an amount Santos cannot deposit at short notice. Talks are currently on hold.

The Argentine club are concerned about being left unpaid. In informal discussions cited in the report, recent dealings in Brazil were described as poor, with Grêmio said to have yet to pay for Nardoni.

Given the impasse, Di Cesare is now virtually off the table, and the club are seeking another option to reinforce a position whose shortcomings only became clear once the season had started.

Paraguayan defender Alexis Duarte struggled in his chance and has dropped to the back of the queue, with little prospect of inclusion. He is expected to be moved on, which would free up a place. João Basso has not convinced the staff either.

The remaining options are Luan Peres, Zé Ivaldo and Adonís Frías, who have rotated as starters in the opening matches.

A new centre-back is likely to be the Peixe's final market move, following the arrivals of Gabriel Menino, Cristian Oliva, Rony, Moisés and Gabriel Barbosa.
