Rangers’ EFL slop market has come back to haunt them

Article image:Rangers’ EFL slop market has come back to haunt them

In the last entry we discussed how Steven Smith was unable or unwilling to change the personnel much at all at Rangers, and the same old story resulted at Ibrox. However, this also highlights a deeper problem that Ibrox has been talking about for many months, and that is the EFL slop that has completely engulfed Rangers’ squad. Rangers sign EFL slop.

The EFL problem

How on earth are Rangers meant to win anything with Joe Rothwell? How on earth are Rangers meant to win anything with Jayden Meghoma? The club is absolutely chock full of lower league English rubbish that has no business being at a club the size of the Ibrox giants. Rangers spent anywhere between £35 million and £45 million, depending on who you believe, on an absolute heap of garbage this summer. It was a record amount for a single window. Even during the Dick Advocaat days, Rangers never spent that much in one go. And yet this group of players couldn’t clean the boots of what the Dutchman brought in.

A squad not fit for Rangers

You cannot win matches with a squad of this level. It’s utterly terrible. Some fans have even argued it might be worse than what Rangers had in 2012. That was after going down to the third division. There’s a strong case for that. When you look at the rot signed by Russell Martin and even by his predecessor Philippe Clement, it’s hard to see what this team can do. Only one man was ever able to take a poor Rangers side and turn it into giants, and that was Walter Smith. But even he had to make smart signings to do it. Back in January 2007, taking over Paul Le Guen’s dreadful squad, he brought in David Weir, Kevin Thomson and Ugo Ehiogu, and that completely changed everything.

The transfer failures continue

Today, Rangers just keep signing mince. The Youssef Chermiti deal is a scandal in itself. But the wider issue is the market Rangers are shopping in. These players are not Rangers standard. Sure, Aasgaard scored a stunning goal yesterday, but that’s the only decent thing he’s done all season. And he cost £5 million from Luton, a League One side. That’s not the level Rangers should be aiming for.

Whenever Ibrox Noise criticises the signings, fans used to always bring up Matt O’Riley at Celtic They were pointing out he came from MK Dons and became a star. They secured that single gem. Rangers, on the other hand, keep digging through garbage and finding nothing but rubbish. It’s as if they’re desperate to unearth another O’Riley but keep ending up with duds. And that’s the real issue. Until Rangers stop shopping in the bargain bin, no manager, interim or permanent, can truly succeed.
