Rangers have absolutely no hope if the 49ers won’t fire Russell Martin

After yet another hopeless draw for Russell Martin’s Rangers, and a concession after the match that, to quote the manager, “you can’t just win games,” it has become abundantly clear that not winning is now becoming the norm for this regime.

And therein lies a huge problem for Rangers fans. The last remaining embers of support for Martin and this regime are probably finding it a little bit tougher to hold on now.

The problem is simple. Rangers are must win. They have always been must win. Winning is all that matters at Rangers — it always was. For a manager of Rangers to ever say that you can’t just win games, and reportedly to have said pre-match that this wasn’t necessarily a must-win match, shows just how far the regime under Martin is sinking.

This is literally dreadful, but of course worse is to come, because it is not strictly just the manager to blame — it is the owners. They are the ones. The 49ers Enterprises, Andrew Kavanagh and Parag Marathe, are the ones who hold the key. They are refusing to pull any plugs whatsoever. There is nothing happening by the hierarchy to make any difference at all.

Ibrox Noise earlier discussed the disappearance of Dave King, the former chairman. He of course said at the time how great the 49ers Enterprises were going to be for Rangers. There is no sign of that. Yes, we spent big money this summer — that’s the one good thing we can say the new owners have produced. But otherwise, they are allowing a one-point-a-match manager to remain in his post. It is beyond unacceptable.

As much rage as is being aimed at Russell Martin — and it is understandable — the real protest, as we have said before and as McMurdo Jr also said, should be aimed at the owners. They are not making the changes.

The hierarchy, such as Patrick Stewart and Kevin Thelwell, may have the authority to go ahead and do things like this, but they need the approval of the owners. It is as simple as that. And as it stands, they don’t have that. The owners have further backed Russell Martin to the hilt.

So for fans wanting rid of this manager — well, the owners don’t want rid of him. And fans need to protest against the owners, not even the board, not even the manager, but the owners. They hold the key. If Cavenagh is not willing to pull that plug, there is nothing anyone can do about Russell Martin.
