Barcelona did not have it easy against a spirited Sevilla last night, and the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan made sure that the Catalans were made to suffer for every bout of possession.

For the first time this season, Barcelona entered half-time on level terms and deservedly so as Sevilla put in a stellar show. However, Raphinha and Lamine Yamal took matters into their own hands after the break and scored two goals with ease.

The win takes Barcelona to 21 points in seven games and ensured they kept their perfect record alive. It was, however, Barcelona’s toughest challenge of the season yet without any doubt.

Dominik Livakovic: 7.5

The Croatian goalkeeper had a solid debut, pulling off some good reflex blocks when Sevilla pushed forward in attack. Not much he could do to prevent the opening goal.

He showed serious calm when faced with Sevilla’s press and did not struggle with the ball at his feet.

Joao Cancelo: 7.5

After having a sensational performance in the previous game, Cancelo was very subdued against Sevilla as he seemed to struggle with the physicality of the game. His crosses were wayward, and he barely got into the attacking third with meaningful possession.

Andreas Christensen: 8

The Danish defender started alongside Cubarsi in the high-octane clash and did well to hold the offside trap largely. He was caught in a difficult situation with the hosts pressing hard, but managed to play the ball out relatively comfortably.

Earned a great assist for Raphinha’s opener as he split the Sevilla defence and opened up space for the captain to score.

Pau Cubarsi: 8

Back in the lineup after a rest in the previous game, the young defender was alert, sharp and confident with his distribution. 

He did not look to step up in the buildup and remained as a last line of defence while even Christensen moved forward. His challenges were on-point, and distribution under pressure was sensational.

Eric Garcia: 6.5

Garcia had a poor game by his standards and struggled to keep up with Sevilla’s Felix Correa time and time again. Did very poorly in Sevilla’s opening goal, and his flank was the biggest source of attacking threat for the hosts.

In attack, he barely managed to string passes together and did not keep up well with Sevilla’s spirited press.

Rodri: 8.5

Rodri was the one Barcelona player who was unperturbed by Sevilla’s physical and aggressive style of play, and he was often the only player who managed to cut attacks off.

Standing tall in midfield, the Spaniard took charge of Barcelona’s ball-circulation, defence-to-attack transition and interceptions. Even directly saved a massive goalscoring chance close to half-time with a crucial block.

Pedri: 8

The midfield star played in a more advanced role and constantly looked for line-breaking passes to set his teammates free. 

He was successful on occasion, but with far less reliability than usual. Pedri even had a couple of chances to go for the goal which he messed up embarrassingly.

Stepped up after the break and looked much closer to his usual self.

Fermin Lopez: 7.5

Fermin was relentless with his work rate off the ball and dribbles on it, but simply did not find much end product of value.

For a player associated with being a direct goal threat, Lopez barely found himself in threatening positions last night and was heavily under pressure by the Sevilla defence. Combined well with Yamal and Raphinha and did well in the overall combination play.

Anthony Gordon: 6.5

Once again, Gordon appeared isolated on the flank and relatively distant from the busy buildup through the middle. He did not complete many take-ons and did not produce much end-product in terms of crosses.

Gordon’s work-rate was positive, but his impact has been on the decline in recent games. He even drifted centrally as the game progressed, but did not get into any promising goal-scoring situation.

Raphinha: 10

The captain was once again the difference maker for Barcelona, and he could well be the single most influential player in world football right now.

Scored a sensational goal to open the scoring, wrong-footing the defence and scoring with his traditional low strike. Completed his brace with a lovely header off Yamal’s assist and could well have had a hat-trick with an Olimpico which struck the far post. 

Eventually did complete his hat-trick with a wonderful chipped finish over the goalkeeper.

Lamine Yamal: 9

Yamal once again shone bright against Sevilla as the creator-in-chief of Barcelona. 

Going up against one of the league’s best defences, it was always going to be difficult for Barcelona to create chances. In those moments, Yamal took matters into his own hands and produced magic no one could see coming.

Took on defenders and found space to provide a cross perfectly into Raphinha’s path to put Barcelona ahead. Then went on to assist the captain once more with a perfect through ball to make it 3-1.
