Wolves have suffered a major setback, with Raul Jimenez ruled out of Sunday’s Black Country derby against West Brom at Molineux after a knee injury that will sideline him for several weeks.
Head coach Cesar Peixoto said the 35-year-old was hurt in the first half of the EFL Cup tie with Everton and described it as a knee issue that is not muscular. According to ExpressAndStar.com, he added Jimenez faces a few weeks out.
Jimenez went down close to half-time after a challenge near the edge of the area, received treatment and was substituted, leaving the field with a grimace. Peixoto had planned to give him 45 minutes, sharing duties with Adam Armstrong, to manage fitness before the derby.
The Mexican came off the bench in the 1-0 win over Sheffield United last weekend and scored the winner. He missed both 2021 Black Country derbies, played behind closed doors, following a serious head injury sustained against Arsenal in November 2020.
Peixoto admitted frustration, saying injuries can occur in matches or training, but stressed Wolves have options and will compete. The setback is likely to see Armstrong lead the line against Albion. He also noted the side have coped without Mosquera, Rafiki Said and Jean-Ricner Bellegarde and highlighted the need to recover well in a three-game week.
