Antonio Rudiger and David Alaba could leave Real Madrid when their contracts run out next summer, according to ESPN.
Rudiger has been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia, and he could leave on a free transfer if Madrid decide not to extend his contract.
Alaba could follow the former Chelsea man through the Santiago Bernabeu exit at the end of the season.
With Rudiger and Alaba facing uncertain futures, Madrid have decided to re-evaluate their plans to shake up their defensive line-up.
Los Blancos are in the market for long-term defensive replacements for both stalwarts.
Madrid has had a long-standing interest in Arsenal centre-back William Saliba. For months, he was seen as the dream addition to a revamped backline.
The 24-year-old has the experience and leadership qualities that Madrid look for in a defender, and they did their best to stall his contract renewal at the Emirates Stadium.
However, Arsenal prevailed, with the Frenchman now expected to sign a new long-term deal with the Gunners, effectively ending any speculation about his future.
With Saliba no longer on the market, Madrid have shifted their attention back to Saliba’s countryman Ibrahima Konate.
The Liverpool defender has been on Madrid’s radar, but opinions on him within the club are divided.
Konate has plenty of Premier League pedigree, and snapping him up on a free transfer would be a coup.
However, there are those within Madrid’s hierarchy who are cautious about whether he fully fits the club’s long-term vision.
Liverpool are doing their best to keep Konate at Anfield, but neither side are ready to compromise.
Konate wants a salary package that reflects his importance in Arne Slot’s team, but Liverpool want his rewards tied to his performances.
The stand-off paves the way for Madrid to swoop in, but Los Blancos are assessing all their options.
RB Leipzig’s Castello Lukeba is also on their radar, although he won’t come cheap, with four years left on his contract with the Bundesliga club.
