Refereeing drama: Corinthians lose late to RB Bragantino in Brasileirão

On the evening of Wednesday (5), Corinthians faced Red Bull Bragantino at the Cícero de Souza Marques Stadium in a match valid for the 32nd round of the Brazilian Championship and lost by a score of 2 x 1. The goal for the Alvinegro was scored by forward Yuri Alberto in the second half. With this result, the Corinthians team remains in tenth place with 42 points (11 wins, nine draws, and 12 losses – 35 goals scored and 37 conceded).

The Corinthians coaching staff, for the match, could not count on: goalkeeper Hugo Souza (thigh injury), left-back Hugo Farias (back pain), midfielder André (physical transition after a ligament injury in the right ankle), and midfielder Vitinho (recovering from surgery on the medial meniscus of the right knee).

On the other hand, midfielders Raniele, José Martínez, and Breno Bidon were available again for Dorival Júnior's coaching staff after serving suspensions in last Sunday's (2) match against Grêmio at the Neo Química Arena. The first two were absent due to a third yellow card. Bidon, in turn, was sent off in the match against Vitória and could not play against the team from Rio Grande do Sul.

In light of this, coach Dorival Júnior lined up Corinthians as follows to start the match: Felipe Longo; Matheuzinho, João Pedro Thoca, Gustavo Henrique, Matheus Bidu (Maycon); Raniele (Fabrizio Angileri), José Martínez, Breno Bidon (André Carrillo), and Rodrigo Garro (Gui Negão); Memphis Depay (Charles) and Yuri Alberto.

The bench options were: Kauê, Fabrizio Angileri, Cacá, André Ramalho, Charles, Ryan, Maycon, Dieguinho, André Carrillo, Gui Negão, Ángel Romero, and Talles Magno.

Red Bull Bragantino Lineup

Coach Vágner Mancini lined up Massa Bruta with: Cleiton; Agustín Sant´Anna, Pedro Henrique, Alix Vinicius, and Juninho Capixaba; Gabriel, Fabinho, and Jhon Jhon; Lucas Barbosa, Nacho Laquintana, and Eduardo Sasha.

Refereeing

The referee was Edina Alves Batista (SP), assisted by Fabrini Bevilaqua Costa (SP) and Miguel Cataneo Ribeiro da Costa (SP). The fourth official and VAR were, respectively, Lucas Canetto Bellote (SP) and Rodrigo Guarizo Ferreira do Amaral (SP).

First Half

The first minutes of the match between RB Bragantino and Corinthians saw a balance in ball possession between the two teams. Whoever didn't have control of it pressed the ball out in the attacking field. The Alvinegro made its ball exit with three defenders, with midfielder Raniele opening on the left side alongside defenders João Pedro Thoca and Gustavo Henrique, freeing the full-backs – Matheus Bidu and Matheuzinho.

At three minutes, winger Laquintana shot from outside, but his shot was blocked by the Corinthians defense. With almost 10 minutes, Corinthians attempted some counter-attacks but had little efficiency in the offensive sector, as the opposing defense was well-positioned.

At 11 minutes, midfielder Breno Bidon launched Yuri Alberto to the byline on the right side. The number 9 crossed low at the edge of the area, but the defense cleared it. A minute later, the first goal chance for Corinthians and the match: midfielder Rodrigo Garro received at the edge of the area after a pass from Matheuzinho and set up Yuri Alberto, who shot placed for goalkeeper Cleiton to palm away!

At 18 minutes, Corinthians stole the ball during RB Bragantino's ball exit, midfielder José Martínez set up Breno Bidon in the midfield, and the number 27 shot at the crossbar! With half of the initial stage, the club from Parque São Jorge had already had two clear goal chances and appeared slightly superior in the match, allowing few spaces to Massa Bruta, despite both teams making many passing errors.

With 25 minutes of the initial stage, the first change in Corinthians: midfielder Raniele left the field with groin pain and was replaced by left-back Fabrizio Angileri. Two minutes later, defender Gustavo Henrique fouled forward Eduardo Sasha near midfield. On the free-kick from the midfield, defender Alix Vinicius headed wide.

At 30 minutes, midfielder Jhon Jhon launched into the area, and after a scramble, the ball fell to defender Pedro Henrique, who shot over. With almost 40 minutes of the initial stage, Alvinegro became less threatening – the game showed a drop in technical level.

In the next play, midfielder Jhon Jhon shot from outside the area, and goalkeeper Felipe Longo made the save without trouble. At 41, midfielder Jhon Jhon picked up a loose ball from a left-side attack, cleared the defense, and had his shot blocked. On the second attempt, a cross shot went wide.

At 44 minutes, a cross into the Corinthians area, and Fabrizio Angileri collided with Alix Vinicius. After VAR review, referee Edna Alves awarded a penalty to the opposing team. In the play's development, before the review, midfielder Gabriel had shot dangerously wide. On the penalty, forward Eduardo Sasha displaced Felipe Longo and opened the scoring: RB Bragantino: 1 x 0 Corinthians.

When the clock hit 45 minutes, the refereeing added two minutes. At 47 minutes, the end of the first half. Score: RB Bragantino 1 x 0 Corinthians.

Second Half

To start the second half, coach Dorival Júnior made no changes. The first minutes of the final stage between RB Bragantino and Corinthians saw the club from Parque São Jorge adopting a more offensive stance. The Alvinegro returned for the second half with a change in the tactical scheme: the team started playing with a line of four, with Matheus Bidu playing as a left midfielder.

At five minutes, Matheus Bidu received on the left and set up Rodrigo Garro. The number 8 passed to Memphis Depay, who turned on the defense and shot low, to the right corner of goalkeeper Cleiton, near the post! Two minutes later, again on the left side, Fabrizio Angileri was set up at the byline after a play with Bidu and Garro. The number 26 crossed into the area, and the defense cleared!

At 11 minutes, RB Bragantino set up a counter-attack and, from the midfield, had a cross shot go wide. Three minutes later, midfielder José Martínez received a second yellow card and was sent off after a verbal exchange and shove inside the area. At 19, Laquintana received on the left wing, behind Angileri, and had his shot blocked by Gustavo Henrique in defensive coverage.

At 20 minutes, the first goal for Corinthians! Alvinegro set up a counter-attack, and Memphis Depay received from Yuri Alberto ahead, the number 10 shot, and Cleiton palmed away. On the rebound, the number 9 from the club from Parque São Jorge equalized the match! Score: RB Bragantino 1 x 1 Corinthians.

After the goal, two more changes: left-back Matheus Bidu and midfielder Breno Bidon left the field for the entries of midfielder Maycon and midfielder André Carrillo. After equalizing the match, Corinthians improved in the game and had some control. RB Bragantino, in turn, struggled to define in the offensive sector.

At 34 minutes, Massa Bruta built a good play through the middle, and Gustavinho received, turned on the defense inside the area, and shot into the hands of goalkeeper Felipe Longo. Five minutes later, RB Bragantino took a rehearsed free-kick from the midfield, and Gustavinho sent a rocket towards the goal, and Felipe Longo palmed away for a corner after a great save!

At 40 minutes, Juninho Capixaba crossed into the area, and Fabrizio Angileri providentially cleared for a corner. A minute later, the last two changes in Corinthians: midfielder Charles and forward Gui Negão entered in place of Memphis Depay and Rodrigo Garro, respectively.

At 43 minutes, midfielder Gustavinho, at the penalty spot, received a low cross from the byline and shot over. At 45 minutes, the refereeing added five minutes. Shortly after, the second goal for RB Bragantino: midfielder Jhon Jhon crossed to Isidro Pitta's head, who headed into the net past goalkeeper Felipe Longo. Score: RB Bragantino 2 x 1 Corinthians.

In stoppage time, midfielder Charles received a yellow card after a collision with Jhon Jhon off the ball. After review, the midfielder was sent off by the refereeing. At 58, end of the game: RB Bragantino 2 x 1 Corinthians.

Next Match

After facing Red Bull Bragantino away in the Brasileirão, Corinthians remains focused on the national competition. Alvinegro will face Ceará next Sunday (9) at the Neo Química Arena in a match valid for the 33rd round of the Brazilian Championship.
