According to Sunderland Echo, Régis Le Bris has hinted Chemsdine Talbi could be used centrally after his match-winning display against Hull City in the Carabao Cup.
Talbi went close late in the first half, then in the second he chipped the goalkeeper after a long solo run to send Sunderland into the fourth round on Tuesday night.
The display arrived hours after Florent Ghisolfi confirmed Talbi would be staying despite strong interest from Saudi Arabia. Le Bris welcomed the clarity and said injuries and summer recruitment mean a role behind the striker could be explored.
He felt Talbi can operate on either flank or just under the forward, using his speed and composure to exploit space after runs of 50 to 60 metres. He added Habib and Enzo and Riggy can also feature there, and with more wingers now available the option is open.
Talbi was omitted from the Europa League squad yet is still expected to have a major role in the weeks and months ahead. Romaine Mundle is likely to be out until the festive period following knee surgery.
Le Bris said he was pleased Talbi is staying, noting that transfer windows bring uncertainty but both sides now have clarity.
