Régis Le Bris has outlined Sunderland’s plans for new arrivals Jules Ahoka and Dayann Methalie, setting out their immediate roles.

According to Sunderland Echo, the club wrapped up their second and third summer signings last week. Ahoka arrived earlier this week in a deal of around €10 million, the DR Congo youth international having made only four appearances for Royal Antwerp.

Le Bris confirmed Ahoka would not leave on loan before Tuesday’s 11pm deadline. The midfielder could go straight into the squad to face Fulham at the Stadium of Light on Sunday afternoon.

He described Ahoka’s potential as huge and said his breakthrough could happen quickly if he seizes an early chance, though some players need more time. Le Bris highlighted his physical and technical qualities and game understanding, adding that he linked well with team-mates this week.

Methalie will miss the Fulham game as he serves a one-game ban carried over from the end of last Ligue 1 season. He has trained with his new team-mates after joining from Toulouse, and Le Bris believes he can make a big impression this season and beyond.

Sunderland previously had only one option at left-back with Rei, so Le Bris wanted at least two. He expects Methalie to feature mainly on the left side, while noting his past at centre-back and the value of versatility, with others available to cover centrally.
