Celtic received £6.5million plus add-ons from Burnley for midfielder Reo Hatate.

The 28-year-old completed his switch to the Championship club before Tuesday night’s English transfer deadline, signing a three-year contract at Turf Moor.

Hatate leaves Celtic after more than four years in Glasgow, having joined the club under Ange Postecoglou in 2022.

“This is a great move for me,” Hatate said after joining Burnley. “It’s my first time playing in England and it’s a fantastic club to be joining.

“I’m hoping to bring my experience and knowledge to the dressing room and help the team on the pitch as much as possible to achieve our aim.”

The Japan international made 191 appearances for Celtic, scoring 33 goals and providing 31 assists. During his time at Parkhead, he won five Scottish Premiership titles, three Scottish Cups and two League Cups.

Speaking before Hatate’s departure was confirmed, Celtic assistant Shaun Maloney paid tribute to the midfielder and admitted he would be missed.

“I have watched Reo Hatate for a long time now,” Maloney said. “I have coached against him and I think he is a brilliant player. I think what he has done at the club has been really, really good. He has won many titles here.

“If he does [leave], I will personally miss him. I think he has been a brilliant player.”

Hatate was not the only Celtic player to head to the Championship before the deadline, with striker Johnny Kenny completing a £3m move to Preston North End.

The departures come as Celtic prepare for a frantic final push to reshape Martin O’Neill’s squad ahead of tonight’s 11pm UEFA deadline for Europa League registration.

The Hoops hope to complete five, potentially six, signings before the cut-off.

According to TCW, Joel van den Berg and Sam Johnstone were both at Lennoxtown on Tuesday, while Chelsea striker Shim Mheuka arrived in Glasgow late last night.

Talks are also ongoing over a permanent deal for Torino midfielder Gvidas Gineitis, with versatile Feyenoord defender Jordan Lotomba expected to complete a move to Parkhead.

Chelsea youngster Landon Emenalo could also still join on loan as he continues his recovery from an injury issue.
