Crystal Palace Move Fast for Anan Khalaili in £21.5m Transfer Coup

Crystal Palace appear to have moved decisively in the market again, with TeamTalk reporting that the Eagles have won the race for Anan Khalaili in a deal worth £21.5m. It is being framed as a significant piece of business, and on the face of it that feels fair.

The 21-year-old, described as a “highly-rated attacking right-back”, has attracted strong interest across Europe. Palace, though, have acted with conviction. The report states the club have agreed personal terms with Khalaili on “a five-year contract with an option”, while also pushing through an agreement with Union Saint-Gilloise.

Crucially, the fee appears to have met the Belgian club’s demands. TeamTalk says Palace are set to pay “€25million (£21.5m) for the versatile defender”, the same level previously accepted elsewhere. In a market where delay often invites complications, Palace seem to have identified their target and gone hard to secure him.

Anan Khalaili Deal Shows Crystal Palace Intent

This is the sort of move that says plenty about Palace’s recruitment thinking. Khalaili is young, carries upside, and already has a profile that has drawn serious attention. The report notes he has been “one of the most sought-after young defenders on the market this summer”, and that context matters.

Inter Milan had, according to the piece, previously agreed a transfer before it “dramatically collapsed after Italian authorities refused to issue him with the necessary medical certificate.” It adds that “an issue surrounding a heart scan ultimately preventing the transfer from being sanctioned” halted that switch, despite the player having already completed a medical.

That development reopened the market. Nottingham Forest then “submitting an offer worth around €20million last week”, but Union Saint-Gilloise held firm. Palace have now taken advantage, and the report says they have “stepped in and secured the deal.”

Oliver Glasner Misses Out as Palace Strengthen

There is an added layer here, too. Palace have reportedly beaten competition “including their former boss Oliver Glasner” in the chase. That gives the story extra edge, particularly with Forest continuing discussions before losing out.

Khalaili’s “attacking qualities and versatility” are said to be central to Palace’s interest, with the club viewing him as “an important addition” during this phase of squad building. TeamTalk also reports Palace are “holding talks with former Brighton & Hove Albion star Solly March” as work continues behind the scenes.

Our View

From a Crystal Palace fan perspective, this is exactly the kind of report that gets people excited. If Palace really have beaten major competition for Anan Khalaili, then it feels like a statement. Too often clubs in Palace’s position are linked, they hesitate, and somebody else takes the player. Here, the suggestion is that Palace have simply got on with it.

What stands out most is the profile. A 21-year-old with “attacking qualities and versatility” sounds tailor-made for an ambitious Premier League side looking to grow. If he can defend his flank properly and give Palace energy going forward, supporters will immediately buy into him. The age also matters. Spending £21.5m on a player with development ahead of him feels smarter than paying similar money for someone with little resale value.

There will naturally be questions because of what happened with Inter. Fans will want clarity, and rightly so. But if Palace are comfortable, if the checks are thorough, and if the club believe he is ready, then this could be a brilliant bit of business.

Beating Forest to the signing would be satisfying on its own. Doing so while continuing talks for more additions makes it even better. There is a growing sense that Palace are building with purpose, and supporters will love the idea that Selhurst Park could soon welcome one of “the most sought-after young defenders on the market this summer.” If this gets completed, it could be one of the more exciting Palace arrivals of the window.
