Jarell Quansah to Real Madrid? Liverpool Buy-Back Clause Adds Twist to Leverkusen Defender Interest

Real Madrid are tracking Jarell Quansah closely, according to Bild, with the Bayer Leverkusen defender emerging as one of the most closely watched young defenders in Europe.

The 23-year-old has continued to build his standing since leaving Liverpool for Leverkusen in a deal worth €35 million after the 2025 Under-21 European Championship. He signed until 2030 and has since strengthened his reputation in Germany through consistent Bundesliga performances, along with growing recognition at senior international level with England.

There is a broader context to this situation. Quansah and Trent Alexander-Arnold are competing for a place on the right side of England’s defence, and that positional flexibility is a major part of Quansah’s appeal. He can operate at centre-back or right-back, offering pace, physicality in duels and composure in possession, all qualities elite clubs are prioritising heavily.

Real Madrid Interest Builds Around Quansah

Bild reports that Real Madrid scouts are following Quansah in detail as the Spanish club prepare for a summer in which defensive recruitment is expected to be a priority. With at least two defenders potentially needed, Quansah is understood to be firmly on the radar. His connection with Jude Bellingham, described as a close friend from the England set-up, only adds another layer to the discussion, even if recruitment decisions will rest on sporting fit above all else.

Liverpool Buy-Back Clause Could Shape Outcome

Liverpool remain central to any future move. The report states they hold an option to re-sign Quansah until 15 June 2027 for €70 million. That clause gives Liverpool significant leverage if his development continues on the current trajectory.

There is also wider Premier League interest. Chelsea have reportedly made enquiries, while Arsenal saw a €65 million bid rejected by Leverkusen last August. That underlines the level Quansah is now operating at, and why this story may gather pace well before 2027.

Our View

As a Liverpool supporter, this report lands as a genuine surprise, and probably an uncomfortable one too. Quansah leaving for €35 million already felt like a move that would be judged over time, because the talent was always obvious. Seeing him now linked with Real Madrid, while Liverpool only have a buy-back route to regain control, sharpens the debate immediately.

From a fan perspective, the first reaction is simple. Why was a player with this ceiling allowed to leave permanently in the first place? Quansah always looked like someone who could grow into a top-level option, especially because he can cover two positions and still looks calm on the ball. Those profiles are rare, and they usually become even more valuable with experience.

The buy-back clause does at least keep Liverpool in the conversation. If Quansah continues to rise, €70 million may look expensive on paper, but that is often the going rate for a young, homegrown, elite-level defender with versatility. If Real Madrid and Chelsea are genuinely circling, Liverpool may need to decide early whether they truly see him as part of the long-term future.

Supporters will be watching this one closely. If Quansah becomes one of Europe’s best defenders, Liverpool fans will want the club to be proactive, not reactive.
