Tottenham Accept Juventus Offer for Guglielmo Vicario as Juventus Close In on Spurs Goalkeeper

Tottenham Hotspur have accepted an offer from Juventus for Guglielmo Vicario, with the proposed move now expected to progress unless there is a late complication. As first reported by The Athletic, the Serie A club have moved decisively for the Tottenham goalkeeper after exploring other options, and there is a growing expectation that all parties will complete the deal.

Juventus’ proposal is for a loan with an option to buy, a structure that gives the Italian side flexibility while also offering Spurs a route towards a more permanent parting of ways. The agreement is not yet signed off, but the direction of travel looks clear. After two seasons in north London, Vicario appears set for a return to Italy.

Juventus move gathers pace for Vicario

The timing of Juventus’ push feels significant. Their interest intensified after they stepped away from a move for Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez and shifted attention elsewhere. Vicario quickly emerged as a serious target, and Tottenham’s willingness to accept the offer says plenty about where the club see their goalkeeping department heading.

Vicario joined Spurs from Empoli in 2023 for around €20million, which the source values at £17.2m and $21.9m, and he initially looked like an astute piece of recruitment. He arrived to replace Hugo Lloris and immediately took on the weight of being Tottenham’s first-choice goalkeeper. Across 117 appearances in all competitions, he kept 29 clean sheets and delivered some important moments, none more memorable than the Europa League final win.

He started the 1-0 victory in Bilbao and made what the source describes as “a crucial save from a Luke Shaw header in stoppage time” to preserve Tottenham’s lead and secure the club’s first trophy in 17 years. That moment alone ensures Vicario leaves with a place in recent Spurs history.

Kinsky rise changed Tottenham picture

Even so, the landscape shifted sharply over the course of last season. Vicario featured in 43 matches, but his campaign was disrupted by inconsistency and then by hernia surgery. He did not play after March 22, and by the time he had recovered, Antonin Kinsky had taken his chance.

The key line in the reporting is that “the writing seemed on the wall that Vicario would depart this summer” once he was not restored to Roberto De Zerbi’s side. From there, the situation only became clearer. De Zerbi “officially named Kinsky as his No 1 goalkeeper on Tottenham’s pre-season tour of Australia and New Zealand”, effectively confirming the pecking order.

That matters, because this is not simply a sale driven by market opportunity. It is a move informed by tactical preference, performance level and squad planning. Kinsky is viewed internally as a stronger fit for the current head coach’s approach, particularly in possession. The reporting states that “Kinsky is a much better fit for his style” and notes that Vicario “has struggled in that area in north London.” In the modern game, especially under a coach with clear build-up demands, that detail carries real weight.

There is also a broader football judgement here. Kinsky did not merely deputise competently, he used the period to establish himself. According to the source, he “excelled in the Italian’s crucial seven-game stint, which kept Spurs in the Premier League.” That line underlines why Tottenham have become comfortable with the idea of moving on from a goalkeeper who, not long ago, looked secure as the established No 1.

Form dip opened door to exit

Vicario’s decline last season appears central to the decision. The assessment is blunt, stating that “Last season, however, Vicario’s form dropped off a cliff.” There were still notable highlights, including strong displays in the 2-1 win away at Leeds United and the 0-0 draw at Monaco, the latter described as “one of the best of his career”, but those performances became exceptions rather than the rule.

That drop in level, combined with injury and Kinsky’s emergence, left Vicario exposed to a change that now feels logical for all sides. Juventus can offer him a return to familiar surroundings, regular top-level football and a clear pathway back into prominence in Italian football. Tottenham, meanwhile, can streamline a position where the coaching staff appear convinced of their preferred option.

At 29, Vicario should still have several strong years ahead of him, and a move back to Serie A could prove timely. He spent the entirety of his club career in Italy before moving to England, with spells at Udinese, Fontanafredda, Venezia, Cagliari, Perugia and Empoli shaping his rise. A return now has an element of career reset, but also one of restoration.

Our View

From a Spurs perspective, this feels more expected than shocking. Once Kinsky kept the shirt after Vicario recovered, most supporters could see where this was heading. The big clue was never just the injury absence, it was the fact the manager clearly trusted Kinsky more in the structure he wants.

There will be plenty of goodwill towards Vicario. He gave everything, had big moments, and that save in the Europa League final means he will always be remembered fondly. Any player who helps end a 17-year wait for a trophy has earned respect. That part is beyond debate.

At the same time, many Spurs fans will admit this move makes football sense. Vicario’s handling and shot-stopping brought value, but the errors crept in and his distribution often made everyone nervous. Under Roberto De Zerbi, the goalkeeper has to be calm, precise and brave with the ball. Kinsky looks more natural in that role, and that is probably why supporters have accepted this situation so quickly.

So the feeling is fairly straightforward, thanks for the memories, especially Bilbao, but this appears to be the right moment. If Juventus are taking him on a loan with an option, Spurs should be pushing to make sure the permanent side of it becomes achievable. With Kinsky established and the squad evolving, this feels like one of those exits that suits everyone.
