Leon Goretzka will have to wait a little longer for his debut with Aston Villa. It now appears clear what is behind the former Bayern star’s physical problems.

Leon Goretzka’s start at Aston Villa continues to go anything but according to plan. Just two weeks ago, the longtime Bayern pro signed with the English Champions League participant, but the 31-year-old still has to wait for his first appearance for his new club.

On Monday, Goretzka himself revealed on Instagram that his body had reacted to the increased physical strain following a long period without match practice. At the time, he did not specify exactly what was holding the midfielder back.

Now, it appears the situation has been clarified. As reported by BILD, Goretzka is suffering from irritation in his left knee. The joint is reportedly causing minor problems due to the recent significant increase in physical strain. To prevent the condition from worsening, the former Bayern star is therefore taking a break for the time being.

Goretzka’s left knee had already caused him problems during his time at FC Bayern. In the summer of 2022, he even had to undergo surgery. At that time, loose bodies were removed during an arthroscopy.

Goretzka wants to make a full recovery

Since his move to Birmingham, Goretzka has already missed the matches against Arsenal and Hull City. On Instagram, the 73-time German international recently explained in detail the reason for his delayed debut.

“First of all, thank you so much for the incredible welcome. After my first few days at this club, the feeling that I’m exactly where I need to be has grown stronger with each passing day. Unfortunately, my body reacted to the increased strain after my time away from competitive play.”

Goretzka now plans to use the coming days and the international break to fully recover from his knee issues. “Then I’ll be ready again to fight for you and for Villa,” announced the 2020 Champions League winner.

For the midfielder, however, this means another forced break. According to information from BILD, Goretzka will miss the next four competitive matches against Bruges, Nottingham, Coventry City, and Tottenham. His debut for Aston Villa would therefore be possible no earlier than October 10 in the home game against Brentford.

The situation is particularly bitter because Goretzka had initially been without a club for nearly two months after leaving FC Bayern. His contract in Munich had expired at the end of June. He finally found an ambitious new club in Aston Villa, where he hopes to compete once again at the highest level in both the Premier League and the Champions League.

His fresh start has now been delayed. At least there are currently strong indications that Goretzka and Aston Villa are deliberately taking a cautious approach to his injuries and want to prevent his knee problems from worsening.
