With one week to go until the summer transfer window closes, it is not ruled out that Barcelona make another big sale. Ferran Torres has already left for Paris Saint-Germain, and joining him in walking out the Spotify Camp Nou exit door could be Alejandro Balde, whose future in Catalonia is looking increasingly uncertain.
Balde’s future has come into extreme focus in the last 24 hours after he was left out of Barcelona’s squad for their 5-0 victory over Elche on Sunday night. After the match, Hansi Flick revealed that the defender’s head was not in the right place, which was the reason why he was not called up.
Flick and Balde are due to meet in the coming days to make a decision on whether the latter will leave, but right now, his situation is looking increasingly precarious. That is music to the ears of Manchester United, who have lined him up as their ideal left-back signing after missing out on Newcastle United’s Lewis Hall.
Flick is expected to approve Balde’s exit if he has any doubts about staying, and according to COPE, the 22-year-old definitely has reservations. The main reason is that the German coach has not defined his role for the 2026-27 season, which suggests that he will not be counted on as a regular starter – which does make sense following the permanent arrival of Joao Cancelo.
Although Balde has been far from his best level over the last 12 months, it would still be a blow for Barcelona to lose him. At 22, he is undoubtedly the club’s long-term left back option, especially as Jofre Torrents also left earlier this month for Ajax. His pace and power profile is one that the Catalans lack in defence too, and that would need to be replaced.
