RFEF’s pioneering egg-freezing plan for Spain players has been in place for months | OneFootball

The Spanish federation RFEF has had an agreement in place for months with a leading clinic to enable women’s national team players to freeze their eggs, a pioneering step for women’s sport in Spain that began in the first quarter of the year.

"For me it is a huge advance because the federation understands that you are serving your country against your biological time, that you cannot stop and you cannot be a mother because you need your body to work", said captain Alexia Putellas. The remarks were made in an interview with El País.

The scheme is not designed to dissuade players from motherhood while active, rather it offers another option so careers do not force women to give it up. It complements an existing reconciliation plan that allows mothers in the squad to have their children with them on trips and during camps.

Dressing-room sources indicate the agreement has been warmly received, and some players have already asked how to access its benefits.

FUTPRO, the leading women’s players’ union, previously reached a partnership with a reference centre in assisted reproduction to support members’ maternity plans. Other countries have since explored similar solutions, and the RFEF is the first federation globally to formalise such an agreement for a national team.

Full details have yet to be made public. An official presentation is planned for late September, when the terms and the process behind the deal will be set out.
