Big season pending

United enjoyed a strong finish to the 2025/26 season, buoyed by Ruben Amorim’s dismissal and Michael Carrick’s appointment as his replacement.

No club picked up more points than United since Carrick took charge of the team. The legendary midfielder guided the Red Devils to a third-place finish, securing Champions League football after a two-year absence.

United have so far this summer confirmed the signings of Youri Tielemans, Andrey Santos and Karl Darlow from Aston Villa, Chelsea and as a free agent respectively.

Earlier today, it emerged that United are close to striking an agreement with Brighton & Hove Albion for Carlos Baleba. It’s believed that the club also want a left-back and potentially a striker, although this is dependent on whether or not Joshua Zirkzee leaves.

There is considerable optimism within the club that United are positioned to achieve something of note this season, particularly should they conclude the summer window with additional reinforcements.

The first challenge for Carrick and his men will be newly-promoted Hull. Speaking to club media, Ferdinand expressed confidence that United will win but warned that the Tigers are tricky opponents due to their promotion to the top flight.

He also set a clear target for United.

Ferdinand remarks

The former defender explained, “I think it’s a tough opener, [but] one that we’ll be expected to win. I’d be quietly confident we can win that game and start the season on the right foot.”

“And I think it’s hugely important. I think we’ve had a great end to the season in terms of finishing third, [earning] Champions League football.”

On how he approached season openers as a player, Ferdinand said, “All I said in the changing room before the first game of the season is: ‘We win this game, just win the game.’ Win the game, get our fitness up, injury free.”

“It’s almost like an extension to pre-season, but the season’s started. I’m sure the boys will be the same.”

Ferdinand added, “A good season for me is consolidation. Finishing in the top four again, qualifying for the Champions League convincingly, and getting a trophy.”
