Rio Mavuba leaves Bordeaux head coach role amid National 1 uncertainty | OneFootball

Rio Mavuba has left his role as Girondins de Bordeaux head coach by mutual consent on Thursday, despite extending his contract on 8 July.

The player said in a post that the situation was highly unusual, adding that he hoped the authorities would validate the club’s place in National 1 and that Bordeaux could return to the very top level quickly.

Mavuba took charge in March 2026 after Bruno Irles departed. He delivered six wins, one draw and one defeat, yet the team missed promotion to Ligue 3.

He informed the hierarchy of his wish to depart after last Friday’s 1-2 friendly loss to Aviron Bayonnais in Hagetmau. The announcement comes on the eve of a behind-closed-doors friendly against FC Bassin Arcachon at Le Haillan at 11:00.

Bordeaux were officially transferred by Gérard Lopez to Sparta Capital at the end of last season, although the club remain dependent on a CNOSF ruling for any chance of reinstatement in National 1 and to avoid administrative relegation to Régional 1. Assistant Arnaud Cormier will take interim charge, with a permanent appointment to follow depending on the outcome of ongoing administrative procedures.
