Leonardo Ponzio began his spell in charge of River’s first team on Thursday, leading his first session as interim head coach with Marcelo Escudero as his assistant.

According to SuperDepor.com, a late logistical change moved the session from the Monumental, planned after “Chacho’s” announcement, to the predio de Cantilo to protect the pitch.

The squad welcomed Ponzio’s arrival, with several former team-mates involved. Gonzalo Montiel trained as normal, while Lucas Martínez Quarta, Rafael Santos Borré and Sebastián Driussi also featured.

The hierarchy are confident in the former captain, who had been part of the Technical Secretariat and acted as a link between the first team and the reserves. Director Di Carlo said he is suited to handling this transition.

The agreement keeps Ponzio in post until December for now, though the club do not rule out a formal contract for all of 2027 if results during this interim period support it.

His debut is on Sunday at 15:00 at Estadio Florencio Sola, matchday seven of the Clausura. AFA confirmed Leandro Rey Hilfer as referee, with Lucas Novelli on VAR.

Preparation continues on Friday at 10:30, back at the usual base, River Camp.
