In a move that signals a new era, Wolverhampton Wanderers have turned to a familiar face, officially naming Rob Edwards as their new head coach. The appointment marks a significant homecoming for the former defender, who is embarking on his fourth distinct chapter with the club.
The official club confirmation reveals Edwards has committed his future to Wolves by signing a long-term contract that runs until June 2029. To secure his services, the club paid a compensation fee of £3 million to his previous club, Middlesbrough. Edwards' history with Wolves is deeply rooted; he was a player at Molineux between 2004 and 2008, amassing 111 appearances, and it was also where he first cut his teeth in coaching, initially with the youth setup before a stint as interim head coach of the senior team.
Club chairman Jeff Shi expressed his confidence in the appointment, highlighting Edwards' intrinsic connection to the club's identity.
"I know Rob very well and I’ve watched him develop at various stages of his career. He has a deep understanding of the club, the city, and our supporters. Now it’s time to refresh Wolves’ philosophy and give the team a new identity — and Rob will be a key figure in this new chapter," Shi stated.
Edwards will not be making the transition alone; he will be joined by Harry Watling, who is set to serve as his assistant head coach, making the move with him from Middlesbrough to form part of the new leadership team at Molineux.
