Rob Mac’s profile has surged since he and Ryan Reynolds bought Wrexham, drawing focus to his wealth, the recent stake sale and his surname change. According to Wales Online, interest has also centred on a once-secret relationship with a Hollywood co-star.
Since the February 2021 takeover, Wrexham have claimed three straight promotions under Phil Parkinson, rising from the National League to the Championship, and are now chasing a play-off place. The global success of Welcome to Wrexham has amplified the club’s reach.
Mac’s net worth is estimated at about $50million (£37.4m), driven by It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and his Apple TV+ programme Mythic Quest. He broadened his portfolio with More Better Industries in 2024, joined a group that bought 24 per cent of Alpine Racing, and holds shares in Club Necaxa and Internacional de Bogota.
In December, Mac and Reynolds sold a minority stake in Wrexham to Apollo Sports Capital after a reported £350m valuation. They have spoken of sustainability, a long-term Premier League aim and a stadium revamp, and last year recouped millions in club loans.
Mac’s acting career began in the late 1990s. After moving to Los Angeles at 25, he waited tables between jobs, met Glenn Howerton and Charlie Day, and developed Always Sunny.
He met Kaitlin Olson in 2006 when she joined Always Sunny, they married in 2008 and have two sons, Axel Lee, born in 2010, and Leo Grey, born in 2012. The couple initially kept their relationship private on set.
Mac announced plans in May 2025 to shorten “McElhenney” to “Mac”, frustrated by constant misspelling and mispronunciation. He has joked about it before, including a 2023 birthday song from Reynolds, and said repeated corrections had cost him days of his life.
