Robert Mouynet, the former OL right-back and last surviving member of France’s 1958 World Cup squad, has died aged 96.
He died at his Toulouse home, surrounded by family, according to Le Progres. He played for OL from 1955 to 1959, making 149 appearances.
He debuted for Toulouse at 17 and a half, shortly before his 1951 marriage. In 1953 he spent two years on loan at Cannes in D2 while with the Bataillon de Joinville, returning for weekend matches.
He made his name with France’s military and B sides at right-back. After Lucien Troupel left Cannes for OL in summer 1955, he asked Mouynet to follow, and despite Monaco’s interest the defender chose Lyon.
He was selected in the 22 for Sweden 1958 alongside Raymond Kopa, Just Fontaine and André Lerond.
Fifteen days before departure, a training match at the Iris left him injured when goalkeeper Claude Hugues fell on his knee. A surgeon said it was not too serious, he travelled but was not fit to play, chose to remain with the squad and later resumed club football with OL and Toulouse.
In April 2024 he welcomed Le Progres reporters to his Roseraie home, bought in 1960. A framed OL shirt with his name and the number 69, a gift from OL museum director Stéphane Bénas marking him as the club’s 69th player, was on display. His children said vintage shirts, including the 1958 one, had been donated.
