Spurs are keen to sign the Liverpool forward before Tuesday’s deadline

Roberto De Zerbi wants Tottenham to sign “one more player” before the transfer deadline, amid interest in Cody Gakpo.

Spurs have a longstanding interest in Gakpo, but a deal is currently difficult to pull off, with Liverpool adamant they want to sign a replacement before entertaining any negotiations over the 27-year-old.

Having reached a £120million agreement with Paris Saint-Germain to sign Bradley Barcola, Liverpool are closing in on one of their key targets in attack.

Andoni Iraola wants more than one winger through the door before the end of the transfer window, though, and Standard Sport understands they have made checks on Crystal Palace wide man Ismaila Sarr.

Regardless of whether Liverpool get their targets, the Reds are still expected to hold out for a sizeable fee for Gakpo, who has four years remaining on his contract.

“I didn't expect a transfer window like we have done,” De Zerbi told reporters on Friday.

“I think we can do one player more in one specific position.

“Yesterday we went to dinner with the owners, Johan [Lange, sporting director] and Vinai [Venkatesham, chief executive] and we spoke about this.

“All of us are on the same page and a very good connection.”

Spurs are expected to be busy until Tuesday’s 11pm deadline, with players who are keen to leave still likely to depart.

De Zerbi continued: “I've been very clear with all the players: if you speak clearly you can't expect surprises.

“The players who wanted to leave have left. We maybe have some players who want to leave and they are waiting, we are waiting for an offer.

“You have to feel proud to stay here. It's an emotional project we are building with new players.”

One player who could leave is Pape Matar Sarr, who is attracting interest from Aston Villa, is yet to feature during the first two games of the season.

Spurs are believed to want around £20m for the Senegal international.

De Zerbi said: "Pape is good [fitness-wise]. We have to see in the last days of the transfer market what can happen with him."
