Roberto De Zerbi in an impromptu interview with RMC Sport and several other media outlets has explained his decision to ask for several players, such as Jordan Veretout, Jonathan Clauss, Pau López, and Chancel Mbemba to be sold over the summer.
It became clear at the start of the window that these players had been asked to leave with each being placed in the “loft” and asked to find new projects. Each of the players had been key in the past few seasons and represented leadership figures in the dressing room.
Most of these players have now been moved on from Marseille. However, Mbemba remains in La Provence and looks set to remain at the club for the remainder of the final year of his contract. De Zerbi was willing to take responsibility for asking the club to move on from these previous key figures.
“I considered that many players had to leave,” De Zerbi explained, “Whether it was Veretout, Clauss, Mbemba who are all very good players but Marseille needed a radical change. Ounahi wanted to leave too, and I knew it from the start, that’s why I didn’t have him play our friendlies in England and Germany. We’ll observe his season and we’ll see next year because he’s still under contract.”
