Robin Risser has embraced the role of France’s third-choice goalkeeper at the World Cup, bringing energy to training and supporting Mike Maignan. Chosen ahead of Lucas Chevalier, he has settled swiftly into the group.

According to L'Équipe, end-of-session drills at Bentley University have become a lively showcase, with attackers lining up and Rayan Cherki urging on Risser, nicknamed Roro. The Lens goalkeeper repeatedly stood up to the barrage, to the delight of team-mates.

Since reporting to Clairefontaine in late May, he has thrown himself into the unglamorous duties of a No 3, from aiding finishers to keeping Maignan sharp. Brice Samba, the number two, sometimes takes over in these routines.

After the 1-0 win against Paraguay on Saturday, Risser said he was savouring the experience, that the group feels good, and that progress would come step by step. He stressed he is honoured to be on the list, grateful for the welcome from two experienced keepers, and focused on bringing freshness and putting Maignan in the best possible conditions.

In Waltham on Tuesday he reiterated that his role had been clear from the start and that he would give everything for the collective. He expects only that contribution to be remembered.

Didier Deschamps has rarely chosen a player for a major tournament without a prior call-up, the exception being Bradley Barcola at Euro 2024. Risser’s voice and application within Franck Raviot’s goalkeeper unit suggest he has already validated that decision.
