Roma had a competent summer in terms of transfers but refused to make any late moves on deadline day to strengthen the squad. In the aftermath of this, there has been speculation in the Italian press about a rift formed between head coach Gian Piero Gasperini and Giallorossi sporting director Frederic Massara.

In an attempt to clarify things, Gasperini revealed, with quotes from Gazzetta.it, that “the club has always had a shared version. We didn’t manage to achieve everything but the commitment was strong on all fronts,” adding to the rumours of tensions with Massara that “We do different jobs. I understand the difficulties of the transfer market and the strategies about when to push or when to bluff. I don’t take part in negotiations because that is not my role but there must be synergy between the coach, the owner and the sporting director. I must say the club’s presence has been greater in recent years and that’s fundamental for me.”

The Italian head coach, who took over in charge of the Giallorossi this summer after leaving Atalanta, also took some time to discuss why the club made no deadline day moves and, in fact, signed just two players in August.

“As often happens, the final hours of the market are always the most turbulent, when clubs try to fix problems in just a few hours that haven’t been solved in weeks,” the coach said, before adding “Roma still had the desire and, if you like, the need to make some moves. However, as far as I am concerned, even with a very willing club to approve some operations, the last-minute opportunities would not have brought technical benefits and would have represented significant financial outlays.”

Gasperini did hint that the club could make further additions in the January transfer window, stating “At that point, the club will have the chance to act with more calm and more success in the January market. The difficulties of financial fair play played a role.”

This summer, Roma signed the likes of Wesley, Evan Ferguson, Leon Bailey and Kostas Tsimikas – with a total of nine new additions made and at least 10 first team players confirmed to have left the club.
