Romarinho quits Série A club before possible Corinthians clash

On the evening of last Monday, the 20th, Esporte Clube Vitória announced the termination with Romarinho, a historic name for Corinthians, in consensus after a request from the red-black team. Next Saturday, the forward and Timão would meet for the first time since his departure in 2014.

According to the official statement released, the early termination of the contract was “motivated by a matter of personal interest of the athlete.” The contract began in July of this year and was valid until July of next year, when the season is halfway through.

Romarinho joined Corinthians very young, at just 21 years old, in May 2012. The forward gained prominence after being named the revelation of that year's Paulistão with Bragantino's jersey, scoring six goals in the competition. Timão won the competition against Santos, which had priority in the negotiation, and signed with the player.

The player played his last game for Corinthians in September 2014, against Red Bull Bragantino, in that year's Copa do Brasil. Romarinho was sold to Al-Jaish, from Qatar, for 8 million euros (R$ 23.4 million at the time's exchange rate). He said goodbye after playing 141 games with the alvinegra jersey, scoring 25 goals (20% of them against Palmeiras) and winning four titles: Libertadores, Mundial, Paulistão, and Recopa.

The match between Corinthians and Vitória takes place next Saturday, for the second round of the Brasileirão. The ball will roll on the Barradão field, home of the Bahia club, starting at 4 p.m. (Brasília time).
