According to Coluna Do Fla, Romário moved to address criticism after following the World Cup in the United States while away from Brasília. During the Senate session on Tuesday 30, he took part remotely and set out his position.
He said he had not requested leave from his mandate during the tournament. He also filed an official letter waiving his R$ 46,400 salary and all Senate benefits from 11 June to 19 July 2026.
Romário stressed the decision was voluntary and added that he remains available to carry out parliamentary work. He said any payment made in that window would be returned to the public coffers.
He is permitted to attend remotely, a rule in place since 2020 when senators were allowed to mark presence and join sessions online.
He has served as a senator since 2015 for PL-RJ, more than 11 years in the role, after first entering politics as a federal deputy in 2010.
The former striker has been in the United States as a special pundit for CazéTV and also appears daily on his own Romário TV channel.
He has been present at all Brazil matches so far, seeing the draw with Morocco in the opener, wins over Haiti and Scotland in the group stage, then victory against Japan.
Brazil face Norway in the last 16 on Sunday five in New Jersey, United States, with kick-off at 17:00 Brasília time.
