Ronaldinho and Jermaine Defoe graced the Stadium of Light on Bank Holiday Monday as a Ronaldinho-led team faced a UK Icons side featuring Sunderland great Kevin Phillips and Defoe.
According to Sunderland Echo, the Black Cats' home welcomed a glittering cast just over 24 hours after Regis Le Bris’ side secured a seventh-placed finish in the Premier League, earning a place in next season’s Europa League.
Few players have enjoyed greater global stature over the last two decades than Ronaldinho, the former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain star. Images from the day showed him part of a celebratory occasion on Wearside.
That league finish means more high-profile visitors could come to the city next season, with AC Milan, Juventus and Olympique Marseille among those to have qualified for UEFA’s secondary competition.
The exhibition provided supporters with a lively end to the long weekend at the Stadium of Light.
