Roy Keane says he would bin Man City medals won by ‘cheating’ | OneFootball

Roy Keane has delivered a fierce response to Manchester City’s Premier League financial verdict, saying he would throw away his medals if he had been one of the players who won them during the period covered by the case.

An independent commission found City guilty of the vast majority of the financial-rule breaches investigated between 2009 and 2018. The findings included the use of what the commission described as “sham” commercial agreements and the artificial inflation of the club’s revenues. City continue to deny wrongdoing and are expected to appeal.

Speaking to ITV Sport before England’s Nations League meeting with the Czech Republic, former Manchester United captain Keane questioned the value of the trophies won by City’s players during the period under investigation.

“If I was a player, I’d be 100% sticking those medals in the bin. Of course you would, it’s cheating,” Keane said.

City won eight major trophies between 2009 and 2018, including three Premier League titles. Their first league championship during that period came in the dramatic 2011-12 season, when they finished above United on goal difference after Sergio Aguero’s stoppage-time winner against Queens Park Rangers.

Keane’s comments came as debate intensified over what could happen to City’s honours if the club ultimately receives a punishment affecting past titles.
