Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac buy Wrexham pub The Turf | OneFootball

Hollywood co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have bought The Turf, the pub beside Wrexham’s Racecourse Ground, in a move aimed at protecting the club’s future.

The club said in a statement that acquiring the pub from Admiral Taverns allows for the preservation of its heritage, brings The Turf, the Racecourse Ground and Wrexham under single ownership, and enables further investment in the matchday fan experience, including opportunities to enhance the Mold Road fan zone. It called the deal part of a strategy to ring fence key areas and protect the club’s interests.

Wrexham were founded at the then-named Turf Hotel in October 1864, making them the oldest football club in Wales. The pub and landlord Wayne Jones have featured prominently in the award-winning Welcome to Wrexham series, drawing visitors from around the world.

As part of the agreement, Jones will continue to run The Turf.

The Turf, formerly The Turf Tavern, predates the club, and records suggest Wrexham were founded inside the pub. Players changed there before heading onto the Racecourse Ground as late as the 1940s.
