Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac mark five years since taking over Wrexham, a £1 purchase with a £2million pledge that has reshaped club and city. Three promotions later, Wrexham are one step from the Premier League and valued at £350million. Their docuseries Welcome to Wrexham has collected eight Emmys.

Saturday brought a jolt, a 2-0 home defeat to Millwall that denied a move into fifth. The pack closed in, with just three points now separating Phil Parkinson’s side in the final play-off spot from Queens Park Rangers in 12th.

“Rob and I first met from absolutely nothing. From vapours, really. It’s not how you usually meet someone,” said Reynolds, speaking to The Athletic.

Mac added: “It feels like we’ve just got started. And yet it’s been half a decade.”

Two minority investors, the Allyn family and Apollo Sports Capital, have joined. Work is underway on a 7,500-seat Kop as part of a plan to take capacity to 28,000 and make the club self-sustaining.

Reynolds said: “I see the club as the big, beating heart of the community.” Next month, the pair plan to help host a live Welsh derby against Swansea City at the Racecourse, even joining the commentary.

Mac said: “Do I want to come and see us win the Premier League? Yes. Do I want to win the Champions League? Yes. But, if Wrexham, as a town, is unsuccessful while we are thriving, we have failed.”
