An American couple’s decision to leave Texas for Wrexham after watching Welcome to Wrexham drew a witty response from Wrexham co-owner Ryan Reynolds, who quote-tweeted it on X and wrote: "Thank god they didn't watch Chernobyl."
"My younger brother, who passed away last January, was a huge English football fan," he told the Daily Star. "We were both big Rob McElhenney fans too, so when the documentary came out, my brother was like, 'You should really watch this.'"
He accepted an invitation to visit, travelling in early 2024 for his first game at the Racecourse Ground, a derby against Shrewsbury. "The football team's great, but we started to get a real sense of community."
"We didn't want to stay where we were. We started kicking it around and I said, 'What about Wrexham?' Our kids are all for it, they're all older and out of the house. We decided that life's an adventure, so let's take one."
They are embedding in the community, volunteering with the Wrexham Miners Project and fundraising for Hope House Children’s Hospice. Jeff has put down a deposit on a season ticket, attended five home games and four away, and is learning Welsh online. "Even if Wrexham get relegated, that's my team and I'm going to support them," he said.
